The Indexed Inventory

grady store

In 1843-1844 B.S. Hawley placed extensive detailed ads for wholesale and retail sale of “Drugs, Medicines, Paints, etc. etc.” for sale at 24 Water Street, the location at which Nelson Hawley & Co. advertised in 1839. These ads were far more extensive and detailed than any other merchant at any time. These ads covered a full column length listing alphabetically each of the items available. [See the list below]. This looks like a wholesale and retail operation for supply of physicians, merchants at wholesale and planters at retail. Concurrently, B.S. Hawley placed a small card-sized ad for 27 Water Street. For example, on November 4, 1843, the following ad was placed beginning February 18. 1843 and continuing through 1843 promoting his business at 27 Water Street.

GARDEN SEED – Just received a full supply of fresh garden seed embracing every variety.
Feb. 18, B.S. Hawley

He also had an additional ad published concurrently.

In 1845, B.S. Hawley advertised as a Factor and Commission Merchant at 44 Water Street (at corner of Water and Chestnut Streets). He also advertised for sale of gin, brandy, wine, flour, candles, and coffee.

In 1846 to 1849, B.S. Hawley was at 28 Water Street selling coffee, hay, flour and wine.

In 1848, B.S. Hawley advertised sale of counting house desks.

WHEW! Can you believe Hawley sold all this? As you can tell, he owned quite the store!

[The picture above is not of Hawley’s store but of the Grady market down the road later in the 1880s. It can however show the extensive stock of the stores and the possible layout.]
